How Do Your Know If You Need Presentation Training?
One of our clients recently wrote me with the following comment in regard to one of my daily articles addressing the importance and relationship of presentation skills to economic success on both a personal level as well as corporate level.
"Hi TJ....what you say is true...but I think the problem is that too many people think they are GREAT presenters and don't need training....the trick is, how to get them to see that their bad style/content/powerpoints/whatever...is standing between them and greatness in their careers and satisfaction in their lives? It's absolutely true...but how to get them to get it?”
If you don't think you need presentation training because you are already an accomplished speaker who has given hundreds of presentations/speeches, take the following test to see how you really measure up.
1. Have a colleague ask a few questions around the "water cooler" a day or two after your presentation to see if your audience knows the main messages you were trying to convey. Was it truly understood and remembered? Does the audience know precisely what action you want them to take? "
2. Could you have easily given your presentation if the projector for you PowerPoint slides would have broken?
3. Are you asked to speak frequently because people enjoy your presentations AND go away with the true message you want disseminated?
4. Do you hide behind a lectern while you speak, look over the audience’s heads to a place in the back of the room to avoid eye contact and/or read from notes?
5. Do you have mostly text on your PowerPoint slides and/or do you read to your audience the PowerPoint slide information?
If you answered “no” to any of the first three questions or “yes” to either of the final two, you are in serious need of professional presentation training.
