Save Prep Time By Speaking More Often

One thing I have found to be true with my clients over the years is that the less frequently they give speeches, the more time it takes them to prepare for any one speech. If you rarely give a presentation of any sort, than every speaking opportunity becomes a huge chore. You’ve go to think about the speech, worry about it, produce anxiety about starting to prepare for it, and fret about procrastinating about the speech. Then there are the sleepless nights the week of the speech.

In short, the infrequent speaker is going to spend dozens and dozens of hours “preparing” for a speech. Albeit, this preparation is mostly of the useless variety, i.e. fretting and worrying.

Those clients who speak more frequently have a far different approach. They actively seek out every speaking opportunity that comes there way, even if there is minimal direct or immediate benefit. They think it is “fun” to speak out, even if it is at their daughter’s Little League award’s banquet.

At the surface level, there is no connection between being the emcee at a Little League banquet and giving a PowerPoint Presentation at a business conference. But once you scratch below the surface, there is a tremendous connection. Being comfortable standing in front of people while speaking is a transferable condition and skill. Unfortunately, being uncomfortable in front of people while standing and speaking is also a transferable condition.

Every time you speak (unless you are such a disaster that you faint or have rotten vegetables thrown at you) you gain some small element of comfort. Over time, this comfort accumulates. The more comfortable you are speaking, the more efficient you can be in preparing for your presentations and the more you can allocate your prep time doing productive things and less time will be spent worrying.

So if you want to cut down your prep time for future business speeches, start volunteering to speak at PTA meetings, give toasts at weddings, lead cheers at football games, talk back to your county commissioners at public meetings, and ask questions at each and every meeting you go to.
