True Experts Speak. Period!
You may not like public speaking. In fact, if you are a normal human being, you may down right hate it. But if you want to be considered an expert in your field, sooner or later, you must speak at either a professional conference, your own company’s meeting, an industry trade meeting or at your city hall.
It might not be fair, but human beings as audience members assume that someone asked to speak either has authority or is an expert. If it’s not your own boss speaking to you, then often times you assume the speaker in front of you is an expert. Of course, expertise is a relative thing, in the land of the blind, the one eye-ed man…and all that.
Speaking isn’t the only thing that makes someone perceived as an expert, but it is one important ingredient. Much as a baseball player is judged by speed and quickness and hitting and catching, an expert may be judged on the strength of his or her publishing, financial accomplishments, respect, and yes, speaking ability.
You simply can’t hold yourself out to be a leading expert on horticulture or third world debt unless you speak out to groups on those subjects, in the same way you can’t consider yourself a pro-level non-pitching baseball player unless you are good at hitting.
One thing I have noticed over time is that the more you are perceived as an expert on a subject, the more you will be asked to speak on it. And the more you speak on a subject, the more you will be perceived as an expert. Additionally, the more you speak on a subject, the more you will become an expert in that area, whether you want to or not. The sheer act of speaking on a subject, preparing to speak out on a subject and having to defend your views in front of a live audience brings a sharpness to your thinking and your communication skills that you can’t get just by writing books, sending email or participating in chat rooms or blogs.
What few people realize is that, in the scheme of things, it is comparatively much easier to learn how to be a good speaker than it is to figure out genuinely new ideas and insights in your area of expertise. So continue to spend time learning more about your subject area, but learn how to tell other people about your ideas too and you and your audiences will be better off.
