Dare To Be Different, But Don’t Be Different Just To Be Different

Attacking conventional wisdom is considered the “smart” way to be a strong speaker these days. Indeed, if you are going to hold yourself out as an innovative expert, there must be areas where you disagree with the status quo.

However, many presenters, especially professional public speakers, make attacking conventional wisdom into a shtick that becomes wearisome. After awhile, I get the impression that these speakers feel as if everyone else in the entire world is a moron. They and they alone hold all the wisdom. This becomes tiresome to the listener. Finally, it gets to the point where the speaker seems ready to proclaim that “white” is “black” and vice versa, just to carry on the game.

Don’t be like this. Nothing is more tiresomely predictable that a speaker who attempts to be unpredictable by being against conventional wisdom every other breath.

There is a fine line between being a true innovator who sees the world three steps ahead of others versus someone who is simply grumpy and likes to complain about how everyone else does things. Don’t position yourself in the latter group.

Pick your battles wisely. The most successful speakers ADD to what people already know about a subject, they don’t spend all of their time trying to convince people that everything they have ever learned is wrong and now they must toss out all of their learning and blindly accept the realities put forth by the brilliant speaker in front of them today.

If you always add new and fresh insights into your presentations, people will be able to figure out that you aren’t just delivering conventional wisdom. You will be perceived as “wise” without having to beat people of their heads.
