Shut Your *@#$ing Mouth

It may be cute our funny to curse around family, friends, or colleagues. It may even be necessary. At times a choice expletive may be the perfect way of conveying the importance you attach to a certain action or inaction. But cursing while giving a public presentation or media interview doesn’t work, in my estimation.

Some people curse to be funny; others to seem “real” or “hip.” Some curse to differentiate themselves from stuffed shirts or other pompous figures. These are, perhaps, all admirable motives.

However, I have found that cursing just doesn’t work when you are giving a speech. And I don’t say this because I am some prim-and-proper blue-nosed individual who is offended by profanity. Far from it. It makes no difference to me. I take a pure linguist’s view that words have no inherent moral value, but only meaning.

Nonetheless, if you curse in public, you are sure to lose the attention of a sizeable portion of your audience. It only takes one da@n or a H$%L to get these people going “tsk, tsk, tsk.”

Never mind that these are the same people who may curse at home like drunken sailors.

But why bother needlessly turning off a large segment of your audience? It’s fine to articulate strong emotions and feelings, but if you can do it without using taboo words, you will hold your audience longer, and possibly communicate more.
