TV/Media Tips

1. Rehearsing your news media interviews, including the exact sound bites you hope will get used, will result in a NET SAVINGS in time for you (your interviews will be much shorter because the reporter won't have to probe you for good quotes).

2. Nobody is ever too busy to go on TV (they are just too scared!).

3. When correcting a news organization's mistake about you, be positive and short (don't be a crybaby and assume the media were out to "get" you).

4. National holidays are great times to pitch yourself to the media. There are more news/guest opportunities (think of all those hours CNBC has to fill on Christmas and New Years). You will have less competition and the stakes are lower in case you are inexperienced.

Speaking/Presentation Tips

5. Avoid Teleprompters! They will rob your voice of its conversationality and make you look like a zombie.

6. Passion in your voice is more important than having precision in each word you choose.

7. Rehearse your speech in front of the one person in your office who likes you the least. Ask him/her, "was I boring?"

8. Shorten your speech by five minutes if you sense your audience's stomachs are either very empty or very full.

Crisis Communications

9. During a crisis, make sure that in addition to everyone in your organization having your message and talking points, that anyone else who could possibly have contact with the media also has your message and talking points.

10. Do not "cut off" reporters after they have covered your crisis. Otherwise they will be quick to do more negative stories about you (continue reaching out to them regarding other positive news stories you have).

7. Conference Call Prep. Trainee speaks with trainer several days before the training session to go over last minute details and preparation.
