Speaking/Presentation Tips

1.	Don’t eye surf-don't have your eyes dart quickly across the room.

2.	Have a series of one-on-one conversations with people in your audience, whether it is three people or three thousand.

3.	Never start a speech by thanking the person introducing you and restating your name and title. If the first thing out of your mouth is boring and utterly predictable, you are sending a message to your audience that now would be a good time for them to tune out. Thank people after the speech, before you take questions.

4.	If you persist in saying "uh" while speaking, then type the word "uh" and write a red "no" symbol slash through it. Place one of these on your computer screen, one on your bathroom mirror and one on the "12" on your watch. Leave them there for a week. After a week, you should be able to catch yourself before the "uhs" pop out of your mouth.

TV/Media Tips

5.	Smile on TV. If you don’t smile, you will look like you are frowning and can’t wait to get out of there.

6.	Don’t sit up perfectly straight in front of a TV camera; you’ll look stiff and nervous.

7.	Do lean forward 15 degrees into the camera; you’ll look taller, leaner, and more confident.

8.	Don’t look at the camera unless there is no reporter or host around to speak to (unless directed to by a producer).

Crisis Communications Tips

9. Stress solutions to problems-especially if you created the problem.

10. It is hard to make a negative impression if you stay positive, focus on your own message and remain polite.
