TV/Media Tips

1. If you don't boost your vocal energy level, like you are telling a story in a noisy restaurant, you will sound flat and monotone on TV.

2. Don't demand that the media obey certain ground rules or observe "conditions" in order for you to be interviewed. You are not Frank Sinatra.

3. Don't criticize reporters for quoting your competitors.

4. Instead, write a short simple positive note to the reporter who quoted your competitor and let the reporter know that you are always available for comment and a brief summary of your credentials.

Speaking/Presentation Tips

5. Empty your pockets before speaking so there are no bulges and no clinking noises.

6. Don't use acronyms unless they are FBI, CIA or SCUBA. (use whole words, even when most people in the audience understand the initials)

7. Give your audience time to react to what you are saying--don't rush.

8. The best way to seem spontaneous is to rehearse.

Crisis Communications

9. Don't be defensive about not being able to tell reporters information that is confidential. Instead, say "what I can tell you regarding that issue is…" and then bridge to positive things you can say.

10. Always assume a microphone is on and recording. If you are being interviewed by telephone, assume everything is being recorded, even if the reporter/host says he/she is done.
