Media-Presentation Tips & IR-PR Info from Media Training Worldwide October 18, 2002

Contents 1. Presentation tips 2. IR/PR professional events

TV/Media Tips

1. You can't count on the makeup department at TV stations or networks--they might be busy, at lunch, or in a bad mood. Be prepared to do your own makeup.

2. If you focus on not saying the wrong things, you will say the wrong things. Instead, focus on saying what you do want to say.

3. When being interviewed via remote with an earpiece on, consider using an earplug in your other ear to block out distracting noises.

4. When correcting a news organization's mistake about you, be entirely positive and extremely short (don't be a crybaby and assume the media were out to "get" you).

Speaking/Presentation Tips

5. Walk around the room before you present (while it is empty) and touch the chairs. Get comfortable with the room.

6. Always take notes on what you like and don't like when you hear other speakers.

7. Great speakers convey the sense that there is no place in the universe they would rather be right now then in front of you talking about their subject.

8. Most people SHOULD be afraid of public speaking because most people don't prepare to speak. Similarly, if you didn't look at a mirror before you left your house in the morning and weren't sure if you combed your hair, you might fear that your co-workers would laugh at how you look in the office. The answer to the second problem is to use a mirror. The answer to the first problem is to rehearse.

Crisis Communications

9. Legally, you don't have to talk to the media. But legally, the media can quote other people on the record and on a not-for-attribution basis in such a way as to paint you as a monster.

10. Resist the temptation to publicly critique the media-unless you are delivering praise.

Media Training Worldwide is the leading media/presentation training firm in the world focusing exclusively on coaching the senior executives of public corporations.

We provide a premium service. While we do extensive emergency crisis communications training (often with less than an hour's notice), most of our training is geared toward helping executives improve their communication skills systematically, in ways that will benefit them for the rest of their careers.

We don't believe in Band-Aid solutions for presentation training or anything else. We build long-term skills that produce lasting value. Because after the next big speech or TV appearance, there will always be more opportunities to present.

We don't believe that one size fits all when it comes to learning presentation skills. That is why we incorporate video, audio, text and live experience learning for all of our clients.

Media Training Worldwide is recognized for its leadership role. A MAJORITY of all NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX companies subscribe to the Media Training Worldwide Presentation tips newsletter (with 12,000 plus subscribers, the most widely circulated media training newsletter).

We are the thought leaders of the presentation training industry. We have created and own more proprietary intellectual content spanning audio, video, text and software presentation training materials than anyone else in the world.

The results? Our clients improve their communications skills quickly and on a continuing basis. Our clients SAVE TIME using our methods and they have the confidence and comfort of knowing they are COMMUNICATING THEIR MESSAGES at every media or speaking opportunity they have.
