1. Don't eat a big meal before speaking;it will make you sleepy.

2. Don't eat sugary deserts before speaking; they will thicken your saliva.

3. If you repeat yourself in an interesting way constantly using different examples, facts and anecdotes, no one will ever accuse you of repeating yourself too often.

4. There is nothing virtuous about "thinking on your feet" when used as an excuse not to prepare in advance.

TV/Media Tips

5. Don’t wear black clothing on TV. Black is too harsh and can suck up all the light.

6. Return reporter’s phone calls within 30 seconds. That doesn’t mean you have to give the interview right away, but you need to let the reporter know you are available and will get back within the deadline, even if that deadline is in 5 minutes.

7. If you prepare your sound bites in advance, all of your interviews will be done faster and you will have a net savings of time.

8. If you do or wear anything distracting on TV, people will remember that and nothing you say.

Crisis Communications Tips

9. Never forget that you know much more about your business than any reporter does.

10. Beware the inclination of not talking about a crisis; you’ll only make matters worse.
